For Love of the Caucasus.: Caucasus Q&A: Onnik

thecaucasus:

1. Where were you born, raised, went to school, live now?

I was born in Portsmouth, England, but spent most of my life in and around Bristol. I lived in London for 5 years before moving to Armenia in October 1998.

2. What do you do (for a living, to pass time, as a hobby - doesn’t matter)?

Challenge

thecaucasus:

Find photos from Chechnya that are not of:

  • War, weapons, tanks, soldiers
  • Destruction
  • Things that are charred or on fire (body, building, road, forest, city)
  • Woman in headscarf looking miserable
  • Poverty
  • Corrupt politicians

You will have to do much better than a Google Image Search.

Photos from Vartavar 2007 by Onnik Krikorian

Vartavar is a festival in Armenia where people of all ages drench each other with water. Its name is a derivative from “vard” in Armenian, which stands for “rose” in EnglishAlthough now a Christian tradition, Vardavar’s history dates back to pagan times. The ancient festival is traditionally associated with the goddess Astghik, who was the goddess of water, beauty, love and fertility.
